Frayme Mylo by Stella McCartney Debuts at PFW

October 2021

Stella McCartney’s SS22 Collection includes a signature Stella handbag made from infinitely renewable mycelium – the first of its kind to walk to a Fashion Week runway.

This week our longtime collaborator and founding member of the Mylo consortium, Stella McCartney, revealed her Summer 2022 collection via an invigorating, mushroom-themed runway show at Paris Fashion Week. Inspired by the power of fungi, the collection wove together uncommon threads of mycology and casual futurism, all in a signature Stella blend that pulsed with optimism. Debuting on the runway was the Frayme Mylo – the world’s first bag made from our mycelium-based leather alternative to walk a Fashion Week runway.

For my Summer 2022 collection, I was so inspired by fungi and their incredible potential for saving our planet. The Frayme Mylo embodies that hope for the future.

The Frayme Mylo bag made its way down the runway under the arm of a model wearing a black, piped bustier with fringing, harkening to exaggerated mycelial filaments, the threadlike network from which Mylo is made. The look was playfully completed with a metallic mushroom pendant necklace, adding levity and context to Mylo’s nature-based origins.

Never one to shy away from the intersection of challenge and opportunity, Stella’s latest bag offering further explores Mylo’s dynamic possibilities. Building on the visual narrative begun by the brand’s iconic Falabella bag, the Frayme Mylo takes on a renewed, circular silhouette and embraces Mylo’s bio-based suppleness and remarkably leather-like surface. The bag is framed with an oversized chain strap made from recyclable aluminum and zamac statement medallion.

“Our long-time partners at Bolt Threads and I have a shared passion for material innovation and launching a luxury handbag made from Mylo mycelium leather is a landmark moment not only for us, but the world. What you see on the runway today is the conscious fashion industry of tomorrow.” – Stella McCartney

Known for blazing trails and changing perceptions, Stella has continually looked to break new ground in luxury fashion by never using animal leather, skin, fur or feathers in her collections. Her innovative approach to animal-free fashion advocacy, and embrace of sustainable materials in the industry, have made her a perfect partner to explore and design a better future, with Mylo playing a key role.

The first product ever created with Mylo was a prototype of Stella’s Falabella bag, which debuted as part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Fashioned from Nature exhibition in 2018. The brand then launched the world’s first garments made from Mylo in a Vogue exclusive featuring model and activist, Paris Jackson, who was one of many celebrities who gathered for the viewing. Amongst the intimate crowd seated along the circular runway stage were actress and long-time vegan, Demi Moore, artist and face of Stella’s ‘Earth Explorer’ Collection, Ella Emhoff, as well as Vogue editors Anna Wintour, Edward Enninful, and Hamish Bowles.

Mylo, made from infinitely renewable mycelium, the underground latticework of fungi, represents the future of bio-based leather alternatives. Developed by Bolt Threads via a state-of-the-art process that replicates the conditions beneath the forest floor inside a vertical farming facility, the resulting bio-based material is soft, supple, and completely animal-free. Stella’s work with the Mylo consortium has played a key role in pushing the material’s development into the future, helping redefine what’s possible in low-environmental impact offerings.
